Yoga has grown tremendously over the past few years in our country with many yoga centres in the state. Many practise yoga for general well being as it is a holistic approach to a gain general good health and myriad healing effects. It could also relieves stress, fatigue and improve vitality and a sort of relaxation therapy.
But recently, Malaysia has joined the neighbour’s country, Singapore as well as Egypt in banning Yoga for the Muslim. On Saturday, the Fatwa Council issues an edict banning all the Muslims in the country from practising yoga.
It is believe that yoga involves chanting and act of worshipping the Hindu’s God, with the aim of “being one with God. The act of the ancient practise is believed could affect one’s faith and thus considered ‘haram’ (illegal the Muslim religion).
However, yoga has been accepted world wide as beneficial exercise and it is even scientifically proven and recommended by many doctors in the west as alternative therapy to medication.
An alternative for those Muslim that has been practising yoga is pilates as it is purely exercise. And by the way, the chairman of National Fatwa Council Datuk Dr Abdul Shukor Husin did say that performing prayers is a good form of exercise. *smirk*
Well, every year I am looking forward to see the public holiday so I can plan my annual leave as well as vacation. I must say Malaysian is blessed with so many public holidays in a year, compared to other countries.
I guess it is due to the many races and thus different types of festivals and occasions all around the year.
