About more than 4700 employees from the electronic sector will be retrenched in the coming months. Western Digital will be retrenching about 1500 employees in Sarawak as they will shut down the operation in the state.

 

Western Digital, the hard disk manufacturer is one of the first hi-tech firms that is badly affected by the US recession.


However the operations in other states such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor are not affected although the branch in Thailand will be closed down as well.

Employees involved in the retrenchment will be compensated accordingly to the number of years service in the company. For those under 2 years, they will get 10 days of salary per year work. Employees who have been working for 2-5 years will get 15 days per year and for those who work for more than 5 years will get 20 days salary per year.
